Color and interior consulting for calm, thoughtful living.

Joan Halford Color and Design offers color and interior consulting for clients seeking coherence, longevity, and well-considered decisions about their homes and workspaces. I work with homeowners and professionals who value restraint over trends, and who want spaces that feel welcoming, at ease, and quietly confident over time.

I help clients make color and interior decisions that support both how they live in a space and how they want it to feel day to day.

My work is grounded in a long view of residential environments, with careful attention to materials, finishes, and color decisions that support comfort, durability, and wellbeing--and that let light, use, and everyday life feel natural and right. ◆

About Joan Halford

I am a color and interior consultant based in the Boston area, working primarily with residential clients, as well as with small professional practices, who want to make clear, well-considered decisions about the spaces they inhabit. My work focuses on interior and exterior color, light, visual cohesion, and additional interior selections, helping clients navigate choices that can feel emotionally and perceptually complex.

My background spans education, writing, and research. I hold a Master’s degree in Education, completed advanced doctoral coursework, and spent many years as a senior editor and policy analyst in the field of education. This experience shapes how I listen, how I analyze problems, and how I support people through decision-making processes that matter.

Over time, my work evolved toward interiors, where questions of perception, environment, and daily experience become tangible. I trained in architectural color consulting and now work independently with clients on residential projects and small professional spaces, often involving homes with strong architectural character. My role is consultative rather than comprehensive: I help clients clarify direction, develop cohesive palettes, and make confident decisions about color and related interior elements, including furnishings and finishes available through retail vendors. Clients manage purchasing directly, and I collaborate with architects, designers, or other professionals as needed.

I am especially drawn to projects that require restraint, judgment, and a long view. This includes interior and exterior paint color consultations, as well as work with therapeutic, educational, and wellness spaces where emotional tone, visual calm, and materials sensitivity are essential. My clients include clinicians, educators, and wellness practitioners seeking environments that feel supportive, unobtrusive, and aligned with the nature of their work.

My work is also informed by long-standing engagement with French language and culture, and by an appreciation of European approaches to restraint, proportion, and everyday elegance. Rather than pursuing trends, I help clients develop spaces that feel welcoming, coherent, and quietly confident—spaces that support real life and meaningful work over time.◆

Services

I offer color and interior consulting for homeowners and small professional practices who want thoughtful guidance and a steady hand in making decisions about their spaces. Many of my clients come to me at moments of transition or change; my role is to help clarify direction, simplify choices, and move forward with confidence. My work is consultative and collaborative, focused on long-term coherence and on creating spaces that support both daily life and a desired sense of ease.

Color Consulting (Interior & Exterior)

Expert Guidance

I provide guidance on interior and exterior paint color for residential homes and small professional spaces. This work takes into account light, architectural context, existing materials, and how spaces are used day to day.

Color decisions shape more than how a space looks; they shape how it feels to live and work in. My role is to help clients choose colors that support both how they want to use a space and how they want to feel in it—whether that means calm, warmth, clarity, energy, or a sense of ease.

Clients seek color consulting at many different points. Some come with clear ideas they want to refine or confirm; others are starting with only a general sense of how they want their home or workspace to feel. In all cases, I help bring clarity, cohesion, and confidence to the process.

Clients typically leave with clear, specific paint color recommendations and a stronger sense of overall direction.

Consultations may take place in person or remotely, depending on the project and location.◆

Additional Interior Selections

Cohesive Direction

In addition to color, I offer consultative support with additional interior selections, including furnishings, finishes, and related elements available through retail vendors.

I help clients assess options, understand how choices relate to one another, and develop a cohesive direction.

Clients manage purchasing directly, and I am happy to collaborate with architects, designers, or contractors as part of a broader project team.◆

Decision Support Sessions

Clarity and Confidence

Decision Support Sessions are focused consultations designed to help clients gain clarity and confidence around specific questions or decisions.

These sessions are especially helpful when you want to:

  • Talk through options with an experienced, objective perspective

  • Prioritize decisions and next steps

  • Make sure individual choices support the overall feel of a space

Sessions are time-limited by design and are intended to establish direction rather than resolve every detail at once. Many clients choose to continue with additional support once a clear path is established.◆

Getting Started

I offer a brief complimentary call to determine whether my services are a good fit for your project.

This conversation allows us to discuss your space at a high level and clarify what kind of support would be most helpful.

From there, we schedule time to work together directly, with the goal of helping you make clear, confident decisions about your space.◆

Victorian Exterior    Residential

Exterior color and detailing were re-considered to restore the home’s original architectural character. Removing non-original shutters and screening, simplifying the palette, and introducing a pale yellow finish allowed the house to feel lighter, more coherent, and welcoming within its setting.◆

A formerly neutral commercial interior was shaped into a welcoming wellness studio through considered color choices, natural materials, and biophilic artwork. The resulting space supports both movement and stillness, fostering a sense of calm and presence.◆

Essays

From time to time, I will write about color, interiors, and the ways our environments shape daily life. These short essays are reflections on decision-making, restraint, and the quiet work of creating spaces that feel right over time.

This is not a regular blog, and there is no fixed schedule. New pieces will appear occasionally, when there is something worth pausing to consider.◆
